Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal screws that are inserted directly into your jawbone below the gums, replacing missing the missing tooth root. An artificial tooth can then be fitted onto the implant.

Over time, the surrounding bone will gradually fuse to the metal, allowing for the implant to remain firmly in place. The artificial tooth inserted will be modelled off the tooth it is replacing, which results in a natural look and no issues with eating or speaking.

Most frequent questions and answers

Dental Implants are intended to be a permanent tooth replacement option and can generally be expected to last 30+ years, depending on the level of care and hygiene they are given. The artificial tooth however will have a lifespan of around 10-15 years before it may need replaced. Teeth that are more involved in the chewing process will likely wear out more quickly and therefore need to be replaced more frequently than lesser active teeth.

Many people may avoid getting implants fitted due to fear of the process being painful. However, with the use of local anaesthesia, patients don’t tend to experience any pain or discomfort. Once the numbness wears off, some patients may experience some mild, temporary pain.

At Lint Riggs Dental Care, we are experienced in talking through the entire process with patients at their own pace and ensuring that they are comfortable before progressing with the procedure.

Once the titanium screw has been inserted into your gums to replace the root of your tooth, you can either have a crown, a bridge or a supported denture fitted onto the implant.

A crown is a single replacement tooth, and would be used when being inserted onto a single implant.

A bridge can close a gap left by several adjacent missing teeth without needed an implant inserted into the gums for each tooth. Only the teeth on the outside would need to be placed onto implants.

Supported dentures provide a full row of replacement teeth together, whilst only requiring 3 or 4 implants across the teeth.

If you are looking to replace all your teeth, there are several options available to you. One of which is a supported denture, which would be fitted onto multiple implants spread across your teeth. The advantage to opting for supported dentures is that they are easier to remove for reasons such as cleaning, whilst also remaining very stable in the mouth when they are fitted in.

The cost of having dental implants will depend on the treatment that you opt for. We offer a range of different dental implant options, including crowns, bridges and implant supported dentures.
